Stroke

What is a stroke?

A stroke happens when blood supply to part of your brain gets reduced, preventing brain tissue from receiving the nutrients and oxygen it needs to function correctly. Strokes can cause brain cells to die within just a few minutes. Seeking treatment right away is crucial to give you the best chance of recovering without long-lasting brain injuries or disability.

What are the symptoms of a stroke?

The following signs and symptoms can indicate a stroke:

  • Trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Confusion
  • Slurring your words
  • Numbness or paralysis in your arm, leg, or face
  • Paralysis on one side of your body
  • Blurry, double, or blackened vision
  • A sudden, severe headache
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness or loss of coordination
  • Altered consciousness
  • Difficulty walking or balance problems

Seek medical treatment if you or a loved one experience these or other symptoms associated with a stroke or traumatic brain injury.

What are the risk factors for a stroke?

While a stroke can happen to anybody, certain factors increase your risk of experiencing one. Possible risks include older age, family history of stroke, overweight or obesity, being male, physical inactivity, heavy drinking, or using illegal drugs.

Other factors include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, diabetes, heart problems, obstructive sleep apnea, and hormone therapy.

How does my provider diagnose a stroke?

To diagnose a stroke and cognitive impairments associated with it, your provider might have you undergo a CT scan or other imaging procedures. They review your symptoms and complete neuropsychological testing, a physical exam, blood tests, echocardiogram, or other heart function tests.

What are my stroke treatment options?

Emergency stroke treatment might include IV medications or surgical procedures. Dr. Zarrin and her team use neuropsychological testing results to develop a stroke rehabilitation program to optimize your recovery and reduce the risk of long-lasting complications.

They can refer to specialists, such as physical therapists, speech or occupational therapists, dietitians, or neurologists, as needed. Every stroke patient is different, so the highly trained team at Novoneuro, Inc. tailors treatments to your individualized needs.
